The Mecca Bingo wheel of a Difference campaign has just turned old footwear into a brand new wheelchair for a 12 year old school girl called Helen Taylor. Mecca Bingo have been on all sorts of different fundraising initiatives with their latest charity drive, where they aim to raise as much cash as possible for Whizz Kidz.
Heels for Wheels was a great name for what Mecca Bingo had lined up their bingo sleeves, as they asked all their bingo members to bring in their old shoes and they did so in the bucket load. The Mecca Bingo Hall situated in Skimpton Road, Luton were one such club which took part in this scheme.
This resulted in them turning those old unwanted shoes into £2,300 in cash and in turn helped to fund a new powered wheel chair for bubbly schoolgirl Helen.
Helen has restricted growth and osteoarthritis, she finds it very difficult to walk even the shortest distances and is unable to propel a manual wheelchair on her own. So a new powered wheelchair should give Helen a new lease of independent life..............which is fantastic to hear.
Heels for wheels is still an ongoing campaign by Mecca Bingo and their members will find collection points to drop off their old shoes located inside the bingo clubs which are taking part. If you are not sure whether your local Mecca Bingo is participating in (Heels for Wheels) just ask a member of staff, who will be happy to advise you.
Whizz Kidz is a children’s charity, which was set up to help provide wheelchairs, training and advice for young disabled children. It is their aim to help them enjoy a more independent and active childhood, which they otherwise may not receive, due to the restrictions on the NHS.
Even though the bingo industry in the UK have been experiencing some very turbulent times, their support for charity has just not waivered, which is refreshing to see. Without charity drives like what Mecca Bingo have been on, charities within the UK would be much worse of as many charities now are independently funded and receive no Government backing.
